RSS Feeds

What are RSS Feeds?
RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication." RSS news feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. If you subscribe, you can receive all the latest headlines and videos in one place, as soon as its published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.

How to start using RSS Feeds
The best way to get started is with something called a news reader. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are applications which you can download, whilst others work using a browser.

Browser-based news readers allow you to catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your computer.

Once you have chosen a news reader, you just have to decide what content you want to receive. For example, if you would like to receive the latest from the KMP blog, simply visit the KMP blog pages and click on the orange RSS icon which appears in the right-hand side menu of the Bookmark Us.

News Readers
There is a range of different news readers available, and new versions are appearing all the time. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so it is important to ensure that you choose the best one to work with your computer. For example, Mozilla Firefox is a browser news reader, whilst there are several web news readers including Bloglines and Feedzilla.

RSS Marketing
There has been an explosion in the interest of RSS Marketing over the past quarter, and this is something that KMP is especially interested in. RSS Marketing allows companies to reach their customers faster and more directly, through streaming information that they have subscribed to receive straight to them.

Syndicated feeds have been described as the "ultimate permission marketing tool" due to the fact that the user has complete control over whether or not they subscribe to the feed. The marketer has the responsibility to ensure that the content of the feed is relevant and compelling enough to retain subscribers.

RSS as a datasource
RSS feeds are increasingly being used as the datasource for web widgets and aggregators. It is possibly to increase the reach of a syndicated news feed by submitting it to news aggregators or by creating widgets that allow the news feed to be embedded into other websites. The advantages are that the feed only needs to be updated in one place for the changes to be seen in a multitude of places.
